Senior Australian Analyst

Stephen Halmarick is a senior Australian economist with over 40 years of experience in banking and financial markets, best known for his role as Chief Economist and Head of Global Economic & Markets Research at Commonwealth Bank of Australia from 2018 to 2025. Widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading economic communicators, he has advised boards, institutional investors, hedge funds, and central banks, and pioneered CommBank’s Household Spending Insights and Sustainable Economics research initiatives. He has held senior roles at Colonial First State, Citi Australia/NZ, and several global financial institutions, and has served on key industry boards, including the Commonwealth Bank Group Superannuation Board and as Chair of Australian Business Economists. In 2025, he founded Economics Unchained, joined the InEconomics network, and was appointed to UniSuper’s Investment Committee, continuing his focus on economic advisory, research, and sustainability.
